Let’s Talk Cake

February 16, 2010

In American culture, the tiered cake has become iconic of traditional wedding ceremonies. One of the most enjoyable aspects of planning a wedding is looking for the perfect cake to cap off your wedding day.  Deciding on a cake is not an easy decision, but the taste testing can be fun and enjoyable experience.

The other big decision when it comes to wedding cake is choosing a wedding cake topper and cake server sets. It is important to choose a cake topper that represents you as a couple, preferably one that you can keep as a memento of that special day you were joined together. And remember the serving sets and topper will be in some of your most cherished wedding photos.

Complete Wedding Cake Presentation

You may have hired the best pastry artist in the world to design your wedding cake, but remember the presentation of the cake is almost as important as the cake itself.   Be sure to talk to your cake artist about who is responsible for what, such as delivering the cake vs. picking it up as well as for cake table presentation.

Gather your  desired wedding cake accessories and decorations.  Your favorite cake topper, desired knife and wedding cake server, along with any floral arrangements, flower petals, confetti or framed pictures to include with the display.  Appropriate table linens, gossamer or string lights always aid in creating a masterpiece presentation.

Crazy Cool Cakes; Cake Toppers

Bold wedding colors aren’t the only trends making themselves more and more known! Over the last couple of seasons, we’ve seen some pretty amazing, sugary detail in wedding cakes making their debut as well.  From replicas of stain glass windows to graphic motifs that rival their coordinating wedding invitations, your wedding cake creation is limited only by the imagination of the pastry artist and your wedding budget!

I’d say forget unforgettable cake toppers when the wedding cake stands alone, accept when I’m reminded that as beautiful as the cake may be, the only thing left will be the photographs and the memories of it.  A special cake topper can be kept for the years to come, re-used on anniversary cakes or just displayed as a centerpiece.  If you’re considering a wedding cake that wows, leave room for the cake top that will compliment it’s lavish decor!  Check out the March issue of BRIDES magazine for pictures of the 23 most creative wedding cakes. Brides Who Love the Whimsy of Butterflies

The butterfly is a powerful romantic symbol and remains a very popular choice for a wedding theme.  Contrary to what might be believed, a wedding can include butterflies without seeming childish or “girlie”.  Especially when paired with a dark color theme, an artsy palette or the newest pattern craze – plaid, pinstripe, checker or damask designs.

Some methods of including butterflies in your wedding?  How about butterfly confetti or butterflies on your invitations?  A live butterfly release comes to mind, but you can also utilize butterfly luminaries, butterfly shaped candy, cookie cutters or candles as wedding favors or include them as a whimsical wedding cake topper.  Bold, artsy wedding reception table centerpieces are pictured here.  A butterfly is a symbol of rebirth; a fantastic sign to begin a new life together with.

The Cost of Cake Server Sets?!

I love my then-fiance, but he is a guy.  And I don’t just mean male, I mean the guy of guys.  Honestly, I sometimes can’t believe he proposed to me and then actually agreed to a traditional family wedding.  I am writing this as a piece of advice because we are now married although I honestly thought a few times that that would not happen.  Paul can seem very insensitive at times and he often hurt my feeling during the beginning of the planning process.

Then I realized I was being insensitive to his guy-ness by trying to drag him into every little detail of the wedding process just because I enjoyed it so much.  We got into a fight and nearly broke off the wedding over cake server sets!  Not actually over the cake server sets, but sort of.  I enjoyed purchasing all my wedding items down to the nitty gritty details.  I was having trouble deciding on a cake server set, I was just going to rent one.  Then I saw it, a perfect cake top for my theme and it happened to have a matching cake knife and server! Naturally excited, I ran to Paul, who flipped out.  He apparently couldn’t take it anymore.  Sounds silly, but come on girls, if it’s true love we’ve had the petty fights, right?  After I got over it and realized this just isn’t his thing, I resorted to calling my mother, sister and/or best friend every time something And you know what?  I enjoyed the experience even more.  (Don’t get me wrong, Paul had his says - he had no problem coming to the cake tasting!) So in conclusion; I say getting married is no joke and neither is planning the wedding, even if it’s without the love of your life!

Choosing a Wedding Cake Topper

cake topWith all the choices and decisions that go into planning a wedding, the wedding cake topper may seem like an afterthought. When you’re worried about the flowers and the caterers and finding a dress, the plastic people on the cake is the last thing on your mind. But wedding cake toppers are an important part of the presentation, and need just as much thought as everything else.

When choosing a wedding cake topper, think of it as a memento from one of the most important nights of your life. Toppers aren’t just made from plastic anymore – many of them come in crystal, porcelain, metal, glass, or acrylic. You should also consider the entire theme of the wedding before choosing a topper, and make sure that it fits your cake (both literally and figuratively) before you make a decision.

Not A Traditional Fairytale Castle Cake Topper

True-Romance-Cake-Top

What’s more fairy tale dream wedding come true than a castle cake topper?  Personally, I think the cake top pictured here called, “True Romance”!  Arriving in 2010, it’s a non-traditional fairy tale wedding cake topper - but what’s more story book romance then the lovely display of this cake topper or centerpiece of a bride leaping into her lover’s arms?

Perhaps not the traditional castle cake topper you may see at a Cinderella themed ball or Princess bride’s wedding, but certainly a modern take on a traditional cake topper picturing “true love” . . .  and one to be admired forever after.

A dream come true fairy tale wedding means different things to different dreamers, but when it comes to elegant, exotic or humorous fairy tale wedding cake toppers the choice is yours!

Some may prefer the “traditional” castle in the sky approach, “classic” Cinderella or the more “romantic” princess bride kissing the frog prince.  Personally, I find the contemporary ”To Have And To Hold” cake top which represents a tradition with a twist, humorous and fun!

This unique cake topper may reflect your man’s true personality, whether he’s the ultimate couch potato, a gamer at heart or a guy who just can’t part with the remote control!  This is one of many new cake toppers for the 2010 wedding season.

Perhaps it’s not the ideal cake top for your formal wedding reception, but can’t you just see it on the Groom’s cake or at a bachelor/bachelorette party as a cake top or centerpiece?  I also saw a picture of it used on a hand-made wedding invitation.  Very clever, humorous and a reflection of the couple’s true style.
